How to Change a QR Code Link After It’s Been Printed

  • Author: Kristin Irish

When working with QR codes, you never know when things will change. QR code marketing is best done with A/B testing and QR code tracking for optimum results. If you can’t change a QR code link because it’s a static vs. dynamic QR code, your campaign stops at the beginning.

Another scenario is that marketing materials get printed, and now you find out there’s an edit to make. This is costly, frustrating, and looks unprofessional. It makes the code null. Dynamic QR codes enable you to change QR code links after they have been printed. Static codes do not. While we still encourage you to finalize everything before printing, this gives you a second chance. It’s still costly though, if the audience gets their hands on the code before errors are corrected. They won’t know when you’ve modified it.

What happens to your QR code analytics when you edit a QR code

First, people aren’t notified that you’ve made changes. Next, analytics are an essential step towards achieving your goals. Depending on your industry and objectives, those needs will change. You’ll see what’s best for your campaign as you go through the process.

When you change your links in the QR code, that’s easy enough in Trueqrcode’s dashboard. However, if you’ve gone a step further and done additional tracking through Google Analytics, you’ll have to redo your UTM parameters, and you can view a GA tutorial about that here. Setting up GA or UTM parameters isn’t necessary if you don’t want to do it.

What Trueqrcode’s analytics cover are the number of scans, the time of scans, and on what type of a device the QR code was scanned. You see that all in real-time, and our system does all the work for you, so there’s no “how-to” here!

You cannot measure what you don’t have any data for. What analytics do is enable marketers and QR code creators to adjust campaigns, giving them some patience over time, to see what works and what doesn’t.

Additionally, when you have a Multi-Link QR Code with different URLs, you can see the analytics for each one. It’s also very helpful for modifying marketing campaigns and providing your audience with the most recent and essential content that they need. Whenever you add new socials, etc., you can add more links, and you’ll see those numbers in your analytics dashboard. But remember, quality, not quantity. Great content only!

How to edit a QR code in Trueqrcode’s dashboard

  1. Log in to your Trueqrcode QR code generator account.
  2. In your dashboard, you can search for your code by typing the title or by using filters like type of code or most recently made.
  3. When you find the code, go to the right and click on the sprocket icon to edit your QR code.
  4. You can change any of the URLs from there that are embedded in your code.
  5. If there is a QR code landing page for a QR code with multiple links, you can edit those links as well. You can even edit the design of the landing page itself if you want to change colors and designs for different campaigns and seasonal designs.
  6. You can also change the QR code design without reprinting the physical code, unless you want to. This could be helpful for codes sent in emails, such as retailers sending out seasonal campaigns about sales.how to edit a qr code - dashboard

How do I change a QR code link for different types of QR codes?

The process above is the same for any type of QR code, but we’ll give you a few tips below.

URL QR Codes

When you modify content on the site, the link in the QR code doesn’t need changing.

If you change your website URL, that’s when you would need to change the QR code link.

PDF QR Code

You would only change a QR code link to a PDF if it were a new PDF you were uploading.

Multi-Link QR Code

If you changed social media handles or URLs, you would need to change the QR code link for that item in your QR code landing page.

vCard QR Code

If your contact information changes, you can edit the QR code in whatever content sections you need to, without redoing the entire thing. This is specific for dynamic, Trueqrcode QR codes. If you generated a static code with a different QR code generator, you cannot modify anything.

GS1 Digital Link QR Code

GTINs will never change unless you have a new modification of a product and in that case, you should make a new QR code. However, for all the other information that’s in a GTIN QR code, you can change the URLs however you want, like in any of the multiple link type codes. So, if you have added beauty tutorials on YouTube, recipes for fun meals, etc., you can add the new URLs as you want, to add digital assets that enhance the usage of your physical products.

WiFi QR Code

For a WiFi QR code, you can change your access setup whenever you want. This is really convenient for passwords that change often to protect your internet usage in commercial places.

Why you would change a QR code link

There’s always a reason to edit a QR code. These are only a few examples, and to check out more in detail for impressive campaigns, please check out our suggestions in our industry and use case libraries.

QR codes for retail require an especially flexible type of marketing campaign. With the many places they print QR codes and the multitude of uses they print them for, their reasoning would vary significantly. A couple of examples would be changing a QR code link on a clothing tag when a product has been updated. They might add styling videos later on or sales for different seasons.

Restaurants and cafes change QR code links a lot for things like ordering and delivery options, new PDFs with updated menus, special promotions, or feedback and review sites.

QR codes for events like networking conferences and trade shows might get updated in real-time for things such as sudden changes, added programs or speakers, surprise guests, a varied agenda, discussion and slide links, and more. This type of industry needs to be able to edit a QR code out of nowhere and be a source of distributing mass content, not an added stress.

Activities and leisure are fun ways to incorporate QR codes when you need to share a lot of content that rapidly changes. Add scavenger hunts, living museums, and galleries where the content changes frequently, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve put together a few FAQs to get you editing in no time!

What kind of QR codes can be edited after printing?

Only dynamic QR codes. Static codes are fixed. All of Trueqrcode’s types are dynamic, editable, and come with analytics in real-time.

Do I need to reprint the QR code after I change the link?

No. The audience scanning after the edit will receive new content. Previous scanners will not be notified, as QR codes do not keep your personal data.

How many times can I change a QR code link?

As many times as you want. Just make sure the reasons are necessary, so you don’t confuse your audience.

Can I track QR code scans after changing the link?

Yes. This is perfect for A/B testing. Remember to give your campaigns time to work and build engagement.

Should I use a free QR code generator?

No, because free QR code generators will not get you the same effect. They may give your account to someone else over time, change URLs to others’ preferences, which is dangerous, limit your scans, expire your codes, and cause other nightmares.
